The benefits of single speed / fixie bikes?

There’s a reason why classic fixie and single speed bikes are exploding in popularity. Actually, there are several reasons why this is the case. Often referred to as the purest form of cycling, fixie bikes have individual style and fit a wide range or uses, including commuting, exploring, racing, doing tricks or just popping to the shops.

Fixies are known for being lightweight and affordable. Along with being manufactured with a light yet durable steel frame, they don’t feature any gears which can bulk up their weight. The lack of gears also streamlines your approach to maintenance. Without gears being part of the equation, there are fewer potential issues that could crop up.

Beyond the bike itself, there are a range of wider benefits. Riding a fixie will help you to get fit and healthy, making you feel more energised and releasing endorphins, the happy hormones, into your systemIt is also great for your mental wellbeing. Riding your bike gives you time to think and breath and also improves concentration levels, as you have to always be aware of your body, your bike, and your surroundings as you peddle away.

For further information about the wealth of positives cycling gives you, make sure to check out our blog post about the benefits of fixie and single speed bikes.

The difference between a fixie bicycle and a geared bicycle

Designed in London for urban riding, our beautiful fixie bicycles are built for comfort, reliability and responsive handling. Steed fixed gear bikes’ lightweight steel frame design gives remarkable strength to weight ratio, and quality components ensure a smooth ride and low maintenance.

A fixie bicycle, aka a fixed gear bike, has fast become the mode of transport choice for those seeking a hassle free, environmentally conscious way to travel. However you might be wondering why people are opting for a fixie road bike rather than their geared counterpart.

The main difference, as you might expect, is the omission of gears for a fixie bicycle. Initially this can panic people but after you’ve been out for your first spin on a fixie bike you’ll realise that gears often just over complicate things. Instead of clunking up and down levers worrying whether you’re in the right gear, you can relax and enjoy your journey. Aside from delivering quick acceleration and zippy cruising speeds, fixie bikes are built to effectively ride themselves. Less effort, more time for your headspace and to take in the views. Whether commuting, bombing around the city or off on an adventure, a STEED single speed bike is your ultimate travel buddy.

Geared bikes are known to require plenty of maintenance. That’s not the case with a classic fixie bike. As no gears are added to the equation, a puncture or loose chain will often be the biggest issue you could face. The frame of a fixie is also built from steel for the most part, a material known for its durability, strength, and versatility.

One of the common questions we see about fixie bikes is how to brake effectively. The first thing to note is that Steed fixed gear bikes have both front and rear brakes. However some fixies don’t have a rear brake, and some don’t even have any brakes at all. The key is to reverse the momentum that got you up and running on your bike, which helps with slowing down when you need to stop. Our guide on how
to stop effectively on a fixie bike
will quickly turn you into a pro.

Fixie Bikes UK

We are proud to be a British bike brand. The Steed family have been self confessed bike geeks for generations, and we even (unknowingly!) championed fixie bikes long before they became so popular. Check out this photo of grandpa Steed on his single speed bicycle!

At Steed Bikes, all our fixie bikes UK models start life on the drawing board in our London studio. Prototypes are then produced which we rigorously test and re-test to ensure only the best fixie bike UK models are built. We love to support the local community, local brands and local bike clubs and are strong supporters of bike powered travel wherever possible.

By choosing to buy a fixie road bike from a UK company, you are supporting the UK economy and helping British businesses provide employment opportunities and pay taxes in the UK.

It’s not just our single speed and fixie bikes. UK made cycle helmets and reflective cycle jackets are also available, and their style and functionality pair up well with any of our bikes!

Is a fixie bike the same as a single speed bike?

You will have seen the terms fixie bike and single speed bike used interchangeably but is there a difference and are they one and the same?

For the most part, the answer is ‘Yes’. However, there is one notable difference between the two: how the rear wheel functions. A fixie sees the pedals move in unison with the rear wheel’s rotation, whereas the rear wheel moves independently to the pedals with single speed bikes.

The good news: At Steed Bikes, you are able to set up your bike as either a fixed gear bike or single speed bike to allow you to select whichever wheel configuration is the best fit for your needs. All Steed Bikes come as a single speed set up using the freewheel located on one side of the back wheel for independent pedal movement. However its easy to flip the wheel around and add a sprocket to set up as a fixie bike for constant pedalling. The choice, as they say, is yours.

Why are classic fixie bikes popular?

Single speed bikes and fixed gear bikes have surged in popularity over the last few years. Often referred to as the purest form of cycling, they offer a hassle free alternative to the more traditional geared bikes.

Set at the perfect gear to allow for quick acceleration but also fast cruising speeds, they allow you to just enjoy the ride without worrying about which gear to choose.

Single speed bikes and fixie bikes aren't carrying lots of gears so they're lighter and are a lot less prone to things going wrong. Single speed bikes are as close to hassle free as you can get.

Single speed bikes have a crisp streamlined aesthetic which makes them not only great to ride, they also look good too.

And the extra bonus is that single speed bikes and fixed gear bikes are generally cheaper!

Low maintenance, great fun to ride, hassle free and affordable. What's not to love about single speed bikes?

What are the best fixed gear bikes?

Simply put, the best fixie bikes and the best single single speed bikes are the ones that look good, meet your riding goals, wont let you down and are affordable.

Steed Bikes' aim is to smash all of these criteria out of the park and put a smile on your face at the same time.

We are proud to have been voted the number 1 Best Single Speed Bike of 2024 by Cycling Weekly, one of the Best Single Speed Bikes of 2024 by Cyclist and Best Commuter Bike 2024 by GQ.

Thoroughbred Saffron Yellow Single Speed Bike

I had been researching the best bike for me that suits my interests like is it durable yet affordable, simple yet elegant and most of all being comfortable and align with it because I planned to take good care of it for a lifetime. Steed bike Thoroughbred Saffron Yellow Single Speed definitely fit the bill. And then I was so excited to set it up meself and Ian was massively helpful and kind he even assisted post working hours, clearly indicating how passionate and dedicated they are for their customers and bikes. I accidentally damaged my bike because it was my first time doing it and was advised to have it checked professionally and to my surprise they covered the cost. When I finally tested it the ride was incredibly smooth and light like a feather. I can see some people looking at the bike (or me?) lol. I truly felt valued and heard given all these experiences. I highly totally recommend this! Thank you Steed bikes! 👏🥂☺️

A beautiful new steed

I picked up my new Steed last week and she's 12/10. Sadly, my last bike was stolen (RIP) but my brand new Thoroughbred has brought back the joy that is commuting in and around London. It's the only way to get around this city – on a gorgeous single speed that's lightweight, slick, and earning me plenty of OH LA LA's!

Obsessed!

I recently needed to use a friends bike and borrowed a fabulous steed bike. The quality was so good and I’m only little and it was so light and easy to pick up. As we know living in London there are so many moments we have to pick up the bike to walk across somewhere mid ride. And I just feel like everyone should know this :)

Good looking and fuss free!

If you’d like a handsome no fuss comfortable bike that’s built to last… you found it! Love my Steed!

Love the look and style of the bike. Comfortable to ride and easy to lift/carry. Very pleased with the bike!

I had never ridden a single speed bike before and wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. Then I bought a Steed and I think I might be a convert. Despite (or maybe because of) the lack of gears, I feel like I'm gliding around the city when I ride it. I only ever seemed to use about 4 of the gears on my previous bike and I quite like getting out of the saddle to go up hills anyway. Plus my (blue steel) Steed looks absolutely beautiful. And, with every little detail feeling like it's been thought about in detail, the overriding feeling is that it's a really high quality bike - and particularly high quality for the price.

(All of this might explain the slightly embarrassing accompanying photo where I'm attempting to give my Steed a loving hug...😳)

If you are thinking of a single speed bike for your commute I can highly recommend steed bikes. My bike was delivered the next day and I have to say it is a thing of beauty. Having ridden mountain bikes for a number of years I was rather apprehensive about a single speed with narrow rims but this bike is a joy to ride.
The service from steed is brilliant and they are quick to respond to any queries you may have.
I am really impressed with the whole experience and am actually looking forward to going to work so I can ride my new steed!

The best bike frame, i had to change for my style wheels 3spoke ones, love it!

I'll break my feedback down into a couple of areas if I may.

1. Unboxing and Montage.
2. Ride experience

Firstly, it was adequately boxed, and protected with bubble wrapped components, so there was no danger of damage being caused to the frame. Putting it together was straightforward, even for those customers with little or no experience of bike building, but I would suggest adding a hard copy instruction leaflet in the box just for good measure, along with the e-version provided.

Onto ride feel. Not having ridden a single-speed urban bike before, I thought it would be similar to that of indoor track bikes, which I ride in a velodrome during the winter months, but I found it to be unalike. Of course, track bikes are fixed gear, so that's the first difference, but they are also very light to steer, so at first I couldn't get used to the 'heavy steering feel' on this bike. I am not sure why it feels 'heavy so to speak,' but that said I soon adapted by 'under-steering' in turns.
What I was most impressed with was the acceleration from a standing start for example. The stiff frame means the transfer of power from the pedals is instant, and the single gear ratio is well suited to flat, even slightly undulating terrain. Of course, very hilly areas, of which Southampton does not lack, is challenging to say the least, and I found myself searching for gears, but of course there are none, so I certainly ''got a good workout'' in some parts of the city. :)

The total weight is 10.5 kgs, which make it competitive price wise; a sub-10 kg bike would cost considerably more of course.
Overall, I am more than satisfied with the build quality, aesthetics, ride feel, price and customer service, and would definitely recommend Steed bikes to friends and family.

I am very pleased with my new Thoroughbred single speed bike from Steed and I have high praise for their customer services and Ian Steed for resolving a unique issue for me with the utmost professionalism and courtesy. The bike is a blast to ride and great value! I have no hesitation in recommending Steed Bikes.

My beautiful bike arrived a few weeks ago and I’ve ridden it every day. This is my first time riding a single speed bike … and I will never go back! The whole buying process was perfect from start to finish.I love my trusty Steed xx

Anybody thinking of going for a steed bicycle just go for it you won't be disappointed. First class frame and components and the simplicity of a fixed gear can't be beaten...... Mike

In love with me Steed!

Really pleased with my purchase - comfortable, smooth and easy to ride. Great customer service too - thanks Ian :-)

Fantastic customer service from start to finish. I had all my questions answered and felt comfortable purchasing a bike from Steed. The bike arrived well packaged and was easy enough to assemble. Rides very well on freewheel hub, I haven't tried out the fixed gearing yet. Beautiful looking and riding bike.

Love my new bike. Simple design and maximum style - The perfect bike!

I love this bike. Comfortable, robust but lightweight, it's perfect for commuting around London. And the yellow looks beautiful : )

I took the Thoroughbred out for a spin for the first time at the weekend and I loved it! Smooth and comfortable - it was a pleasure to ride. I've always had complicated geared bikes in the past and there is certain childhood joy you get from something simpler. Plus I've been calling my bike 'my trusty steed' for years and now it is written on it!! Overall it's a handsome, easy to use and comfortable to ride - I'd happily recommend it.

Loved riding this bike so much! My first time on a single speed and I’m hooked!

Had a fantastic experience buying my bike from Steed!

I had shopped around a little and found these bikes to be good value so decided to pick it (also really liked how the stallion looked so couldn't really pass it up!)

It arrived in great time, even though shipments to northern Ireland can often take a little bit of extra time to arrive, the bike was delivered exactly when expected and only a few days after I ordered it.

The bike looks and feels great. I did have a small issue with a puncture when it arrived, but you expect that when shipping and all it took was a new tube to get it all fixed up.
Though I did get some new puncture resistant tyres as I will be using this for commuting.

Overall, have loved the experience and I'm loving the bike, would definitely recommend it.

I bought a Saffon Thoroughbred and I love it! Fantastic quality and rides very well. Great power transfer from the pedals, and the bike is lighter than I expected. Comfy seat. Looks so good in the yellow finish, it's a real head turner. Also shaved 10 mins of my commute to work ride, compared to my old geared bike! Highly recommended.

I absolutely love my new Steed. I have the sleek black Stallion and It’s easily the best looking bike I’ve ever had plus it's a breeeeeze to ride. It’s going to make zipping around London a hell of a lot more fun. I’m absolutely obsessed with it.

I had always thought that single speed bikes were just for shoreditch hipster types and were really impractical, and the ones I have tried before weren't that great.

However, this Steed bike has blown that idea on its head. The Steed is a really amazing bike with some go in it ;-). I thought that it was going to be a tough ride but it easy and smooth and I felt like it pulled away itself when setting off. I really love the ride and the saddle wasnt too hard, for a new bike not worn in; I soon got used to it, and now its really comfortable. It's a nifty little mover and its easy on the eye...what more could anyone want!!!

Live in SE London, was a bit apprehensive about getting a fixie as there are quite a few hills! But this bike makes it easy and looks v cool too. It’s light and comfortable and I’m now fixie convert

I love my steed bike, it's such a smooth ride and super affordable. I've got the thoroughbred in Atlantic blue and I'm obsessed! Everyone compliments it. It's comfortable, stylish and sexy and get's me around London in style. Also had a few questions before purchasing and the customer service was brilliant. Couldn't be happier, highly recommend.
