How to find the right bike frame size for your height

In the market for a new set of wheels? Then you want to know you’re picking the right bike frame size for your height.

Whilst you can usually adjust the position of your handlebars and the saddle, a bike frame can’t be altered.

And a bike that is too big – or too small – makes for an uncomfortable ride and less than perfect handling.

Bike sizing is a really important thing to get right, particularly when you’re shopping online. So here’s everything you need to know.

Things you need know about picking the right bike frame size

Bike measurements can be…complicated

Mountain bike frames are measured in inches. But, confusingly, road bike frames are measured in centimetres.

There’s also an annoying lack of consistency amongst bike brands when it comes to bike frame sizing and which part of the bike frame they’re actually choosing to measure.

Kids’ bikes are a whole other ball game. Here, it’s all about the size of the bicycle wheel, not the frame.

In a bid to simplify things a bit (thank god!), some bike makers have now switched to t-shirt style sizing. They offer Small, Medium and Large bike options that correspond to different rider heights.

Your height and inside leg measurements are important

Pick the right bike frame size for your height and you won’t feel like you’re stretching to reach the handlebars.

Nor will your arms and legs feel cramped when you’re in a cycling position.

You’ll be able to sit comfortably. And you’ll have an inch or two of clearance above the top tube (the bar that runs from underneath the saddle to underneath the handlebars) when your feet are flat on the floor.

To ensure the right bike size, you need to know:

  • Your height
  • Your inside leg length

Not sure how to measure your inside leg? Stand against a wall, barefoot with your legs slightly apart. Then get a friend to measure from the top of your inside leg down to the floor. Easy!

Bike height FAQs

What bike frame size do I need?

The right bike frame size for you depends upon your height and your inside leg measurement. The taller you are, the bigger the bike frame you’ll need.

Should I be able to touch the floor when I ride a bike?

When you sit on the saddle of your bike, you should be able to touch the floor with your tiptoes. This is so you can pedal efficiently and maintain proper control of your bike when you need to stop or dismount.

If you pick the right bike frame size, you simply adjust the saddle to ensure you can reach the floor.

What should I do if I’m between two bike frame sizes?

If you’re on the cusp of two different bike frame sizes, experts advise that you choose the smaller of the two size options. Adjusting the saddle and handlebars should give you the right fit and a comfortable ride.
